How do I get new timeline for Facebook: The benefits of switching to the new layout

Facebook previously rolled out a new Favorites timeline, allowing users to specify their favorite friends, family members, and pages, and access their posts in one place. Facebook's now building on that functionality with a new Most Recent mode that will show posts in chronological order instead of based on an algorithm.

The new mode, or timeline, will be available on iOS in the coming weeks, but is already available on Android. Additionally, Facebook offers tools to turn off political ads, and the ability to "Snooze" a specific page or person to stop seeing their posts.

Other changes coming to the Facebook timeline include the social-media giant offering users more context as to why they may be seeing a specific post. For content labeled "Suggested for You," users can now learn what factors triggered Facebook's algorithm to suggest the post to you. Factors may include past related posts you've engaged with, topics that interest you, or your location.

The metaphor works really well. A line cutting down the middle of the screen, with all the events from your life tied to it in chronological order, from the day you were born up to the present. A timeline of your life. (Or at least your Facebook presence).

With the ongoing rollout of Facebook's Timeline feature, security and privacy have never been more important to your digital life. The new layout presents all of your current and past activities on Facebook -- posts, photos, comments, likes and so on -- in a handy timeline format to anyone with access to your profile, which may include friends of friends, colleagues, executives at your company, a potential future boss ... well, you get the idea.

The last two settings dictate who can post on your timeline and who sees those posts. Only Me is the safest option, but choosing it severely reduces the number of interactions Facebook offers. If you're seriously considering limiting your timeline posts to you and only you, it might be time to leave Facebook entirely.

Setting both of these options to Friends is relatively safe while still allowing the sharing that makes Facebook fun. And there is a way to review posts from friends before they appear on your timeline, as you'll see in the next section of the story.

For the apps you do keep, it's important to control who sees the information that the apps share -- many of them are designed to broadcast your activities on your timeline and in the "ticker" on the right side of users' home pages. At the bottom of each app's permissions page is another important option entry titled "App activity privacy." Click on the drop-down menu and select Only Me to be sure your app activity isn't seen by anyone else.

Sharing is the whole point of Facebook, but the Timeline layout sometimes takes this to extremes, making it easy for others to see all your activity from years gone by. The good news is that you can disable Recent Activity updates, which broadcast new friendships, groups you've joined and any other changes in your basic information (such as relationship status or political views). Just click on the X next to a Recent Activity update on your timeline and select Hide Similar Activity from Timeline.

That will at least prevent anyone other than people you've friended from seeing older items on your timeline. But considering that your boss, colleagues and other acquaintances may be among your Facebook friends, it's still a good idea to review your entire timeline and remove compromising status updates, comments, links and photos. Start with the oldest items first. When you first started using Facebook, you probably had fewer contacts and might have posted and commented with less caution than you've done more recently.

Considering that even five years ago something like this would have been impossible to construct due to licensing restrictions and technological shortcomings, the new timeline is impressive to behold; but even more intriguing is its potential.

Granted, this is a work in progress; the only three entries in 1991 thus far are about Nirvana, Massive Attack and Bryan Adams, and there are only two so far in 1990. But Spotify in its announcement assures its listeners/readers that this is just the beginning and that the timeline will continue to add dates over the coming weeks.

Displaying your Facebook timeline in WordPress is relatively straightforward. From using the native option that Facebook offers to using WordPress plugins, there are several ways you can display the Facebook timeline in WordPress.

An easy way to ensure your cover image is unique, is to choose an image from your life, like a photo from a wedding, day at the beach, or birthday party. If you want to use a photo to show solidarity or express support for a cause or organization, you can still post a status or a photo and feature it on your timeline.

Having recently been tinkering with The BrainYard page at www.facebook.com/thebyard, trying to build it into the community resource it ought to be for readers, I took the jump and activated the new Timeline, after scrambling to make some quick changes. Although existing page tabs will display under the new layout, they are displayed differently, and there are several design and setup changes to be made.

The Memories feature, introduced in late 2010, allows browsing ones timeline by year.[217] A feature under the same name was introduced in June 2018, showing events from the same day of earlier years.[218]

In February 2010, TechCrunch reported that Facebook was working to rewrite its messaging service to turn it into a "fully featured webmail product", dubbed "Project Titan".[220] The feature, unofficially dubbed a "Gmail killer" internally, was launched on November 15, 2010,[221] and allowed users to directly communicate with each other via Facebook using several different methods. Users could create their own "username@facebook.com" email address to communicate, use text messaging, or through the Facebook website or mobile app's instant messaging chat. All messages were contained within single threads in a unified inbox.[222] The email service was terminated in February 2014 because of low uptake.[223][224]

Users will have the option of switching to timeline immediately, but they can also opt to stay with their current profiles, which mainly showcase a user's most recent activity on Facebook, for now. Facebook has not indicated when timeline will completely replace existing profiles.

Once users have activated the timeline feature, the social networking site is giving people seven days to review everything that appears on their new timeline profiles before they automatically become visible to other people. Users can also choose to make their timeline public earlier if they like.

He added that users may also want to fill the timeline out "with special moments in your life" that aren't already on Facebook, such as baby photos, graduations, engagements or weddings and add a "vivid cover page that represents you."

You can choose a template to use as the starting point for your embedded timeline. All of these templates are fully customizable so you can fine-tune the design depending on how you want to display the timeline on your WordPress website.

Smash Balloon will now go ahead and create a timeline feed based on your template and your Facebook page or group. This is a good start, but you may want to fine-tune how the timeline looks on your WordPress site.

On this screen, you can switch between list and masonry layouts. As you make changes, the preview will update automatically so you can try different layouts to see what looks the best for your Facebook timeline.

Facebook has released Timeline for brand pages. The layout features a large cover photo, with a small profile or logo image in the lower left-hand corner. The cover photo is a space to express a brand identity, rather than push contact or purchase information. The Page timeline is along the right side of the screen. Photos, events, and custom apps are now easier to find beneath the cover photo.

The difference between the "news feed" and the "timeline" [formerly known as the "wall" - often the terms are still used interchangeably] is a key concept you must understand if you are going to be an effective Facebook marketer. This post is designed to demystify the difference between them and illustrate the relationship between them so that you can:

The timeline/news feed concepts are confusing for most because they are intertwined with two other important, yet often confusing, Facebook concepts: the difference between a profile and a page, and the complexity of Facebook's privacy settings, which impact the visibility of your profile timeline to other Facebook users. A good introductory explanation of this is given by Will Holloway:

The Timeline is a space on every Facebook user's profile page that allows friends to post messages for the user and the user's friends to see. The Facebook community calls these messages 'wall (or timeline) posts.' Depending upon the user's privacy settings, the timeline posts can be private, but most people keep them at the default setting, which is public.

All covers are public. This means that anyone who visits your Page will be able to see your cover. Covers can't be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else's copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines.

The first has been rumored to be in testing for a while and apparently Facebook wants to go forward with it. "We heard from you that the current timeline layout is sometimes hard to read," Facebook product manager Rose Yao wrote in a blog post explaining the change.

What do you think so far? Are you able to see the changes in your own timeline? If not, how do these sound to you? Do you think the new timeline will be simpler and easier to use, as Facebook suggests? 2ff7e9595c
